Corporate Environmental, Health, Safety Manager

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: CORPORATE EHS MANAGER

Reports To: DEPUTY GENERAL COUNSEL

Direct Reports: Yes Functional Unit: LEGAL FLSA Status: Exempt

THE CHALLENGE

Responsible for auditing Onward's environmental, health, safety, and compliance programs to reduce work-related injuries and accidents and assist with compliance. Create and monitor corporate policies and make changes based on data trends. Assist the Operations safety and compliance teams in creating a proactive safety and compliance culture where employees feel comfortable sharing their concerns. Act as a resource for plant management and plant site personnel to implement programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety, waste handling, and spill prevention rules and regulations. Oversee safety compliance at the Company’s various corporate offices. Champion the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) model as the basis for the safety management system.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Developing and implementing corporate workplace safety policies in accordance with OSHA standards.
  • Audit existing plant-level policies and procedures to ensure they are up to date.
  • Audit the plant sites’ daily operations and identify opportunities for improvement of safety regulations.
  • Overseeing EHS audits and physically inspecting all work areas and jobsites to identify possible safety issues, utilizing internal and external resources as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

THE PROFILE TO SUCCEED

  • A bachelor's degree in safety management, environmental safety, or a similar field.
  • Certification by NASP or BCSP is a bonus.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years' experience as a safety director, EHS manager or auditor, or occupational health and safety manager, preferably in a power generation plant or power-related industry.
  • Excellent knowledge of OSHA standards, federal and state safety legislation.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA’s VPP.
  • Working knowledge of Worker’s Compensation and claim filing procedures.
  • Working knowledge of federal Hazardous Materials / Hazardous Waste handling and labeling requirements (EPCRA, RCRA, SPCC, DOT).
  • PSM/RMP experience for NH3 storage systems.
  • Experience in developing and managing an efficient contractor safety program.
  • Assist in incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Participate in EHS committee meetings and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.
  • Advanced technical writing skills, including drafting health and safety policies and procedures, audit reports, monthly/annual safety reports, and other related presentations.
  • Proficiency in conducting data analysis and reporting statistics.
  • Strong Adobe, Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project), and EHS management software skills.
  • Positive and professional attitude.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and successfully prioritize multiple projects as required.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Excellent supervisory and leadership skills.

THE PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to accomplish physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to stand, walk, talk, hear, and close and distance vision capability.
  • Ability to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, and/or crouch.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to travel up to 55%.

THE WORK ENVIRONMENT

The position functions in a smoke and vape free professional office environment. The role routinely utilizes standard office equipment such as laptop computer, phone, and scanner/photocopier. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works both in a business office setting and at a Company plant site. In the course of working at plant sites, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, including cold/hot, we and/or humid conditions, and may work near moving mechanical parts and/or machinery. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate in the office but may become loud at the plant site.
